KO Picks for CIFF 2014

Fall brings many exciting things to the city Calgary, the snow isn’t one of them. September is a vibrant month of culture and arts in the city. Beakerheadthe creative science and street engineered art events are happening now (September 10-14, 2014), then there is the Nuit Blanche all night art event happening September 20, 2014 with 10 amazing time-based art events at Olympic Plaza downtown (all free to the public 7pm-1am) and The Mountain Standard Time Performance Art Festival (M:ST) takes place September 26-October 11, 2014.

The Calgary International Film Festival(affectionately known as CIFF) kicks off Thursday September 18, 2014 at 7:30pm (doors at 6pm) in style with the Red Carpet Opening Gala with the North American premiere of the film The Young and Prodigious TS Spivet at the Jubilee auditorium. It stars one of my favourite actresses Helena Bonham Carter. This is the event at CIFF not to be missed. It’s full of buzz and excitement and everyone you will ever need to know in the Calgary film scene. For all the fashion lovers and bloggers in Calgary, there is Advanced Style.  A film about Ari Seth Cohen starting his Advanced Style website in 2008 featuring the sartorial savvy of select New York City senior citizens. This is a fabulous film that is sure to bring a smile to the faces of the fashionistas of any age. You can see it Saturday September 20, 2014 at 2:45pm or Thursday September 25, 2014 at 9:30pm at Eau Claire Cinema. Dress to impress, you never know who will be there from Calgary’s Fashion community… Buy tickets here http://www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2014/advanced-style

Foxcatcher starring Steve Carell has a ton of oscar buzz surrounding it and it also stars Channing Tatum (aka. Magic Mike). This is the all American Ra-Ra-Wrestling drama. If you liked Rocky (or Magic Mike) you will probably love Foxcatcher. The prosthetic in the trailer alone make me want to see this film. You can see Foxcatcher only on Sunday September 21, 2014 at 7pm at the Globe Cinema. To purchase tickets click here: http://www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2014/foxcatcher

For the foreign film lovers, or those who just love reading subtitles, because even though the film Mommy is in french, it is actually written and directed by Québécois CanadianXavier DolanMommy received the Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize earlier this year and looks like it contains an ocean of emotions. You can only see Mommy Friday September 26, 2014 at 9:15pm at Eau Claire Cinema. To purchase tickets, click here: http://www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2014/mommy

My last pick is the Canadian Premiere of the film BONOBO, a drama set in the UK about an ex-model turned mother and wife who is contacted by an elite escort service who offers her a large sum of british pounds for her time. BONOBO is probably not the film to take your spouse to during the Calgary International Film Festival, it’s more of a 50 Shades of Grey for yourself or share with a friend type of film. Boundary pushing and steamy. You can see BONOBO Saturday September 27, 2014 6:45pm at Eau Claire Cinema or Sunday September 27, 2014 3:15pm at the Globe Cinema. To buy tickets click here: http://www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2014/bonobo
