Kaffeklatsch the artistic coffee experience in Calgary
It is no secret to anyone who knows me well, that all my passions and ideas are fueled from copious amounts of coffee. I wouldn’t consider myself an afficiando of coffee because I will usually take what I can get… Starbucks, Tim Hortans, 7-11 or even instant Nescafe. Whatever works. That being said, I have drank coffee in Bogotá, Columbia, across from the Duomo in Milano, Italy and French Press in Paris. But my everyday go-to is usually my nespresso machine because it is the most convenient way to get quality espresso in my body as quickly as possible upon opening my eyes in the morning. But when I am out and about during the day, I love exploring new coffee shops in hunt of a real delicious java.
German, from Kaffee= coffee + Klatsch= gossip, Kaffeeklatsch is a tiny, mobile espresso bar (currently within 223 12 Ave SW). Inspired by the café life so prevalent in Europe, Kaffeeklatsch’s coffee program is simple, but precise. All drinks are made fresh to order with well crafted coffee. The coffee itself is responsibly sourced from local company I am a huge fan of; Cafe Rosso Coffee Roasters. Kaffeeklatsch was on kickstarter and was successfully funded in May of 2014.
Yesterday I had the privilege of being invited out for coffee by Jessica McCarrel, an ACAD alum artist who shares similar passions with myself…art, film and coffee. Jessica loved coffee so much she came up with a brilliant idea about 6 months ago to open a tiny pop-up coffee shop on 12th Avenue in downtown Calgary inside the CommunityWise building which houses many non-profit culturally creative organizations. Kaffeeklatsch is a shop about the size of a closet (but is actually and old elevator shaft) a 5×5 storage unit that was retrofitted to serve specialty coffee, where Jessica herself will make you the coffee of your choice. The drinks are superb and the seating area next to Kaffeklatsch features essentric books from Frosst Books in Inglewood for purchase as well as many local magazines like Dote and Branded to catch you up on the happenings of the city. In addition to that there is art on the walls from AVALANCHE! Institute of Contemporary Art. I can easily say this has become one of my new urban coffee hangouts to meet with people.
Kaffeklatsch is open Monday to Friday 9am-3pm and Saturdays 12-6pm. Stay tuned for Kaffeeklatsch popping up in other places around the city soon…
