Patio weather in Calgary is short lived. Luckily the warm September weather has held out a little longer than usual for us. Last week I finally made it in to a new (to me) Calgary restaurant in Kensington called Hayden Block Smoke and Whisky

Full disclosure, I am vegetarian. I know what you are thinking: “Why did you go to a Texas inspired BBQ restaurant”? First of all, I love Texas. I love being called ma’am and even more than that, I love Queso. Until Hayden Block I have never had anything I would even remotely consider in the ball park of Texas Queso until now. Thank god those days are over.

Hayden Block has great menu items for vegetarians and meatlovers alike. My husband had the turkey and brisket, of which he said was “out of this world”. I had the queso and tortilla chips, the beet salad, the potato coleslaw, the corn bread… and last but definitely my favourite the deep fried pickles. The.Best. I highly recommend them with anything you order. yum.

Oh, and did I mention the sweet tea? So good.

Aside from the delicious food, I loved the interior and the back patio. The back patio is quiet and made me feel like I was somewhere in Texas. Great honky tonk music and vibe. I love Patsy Cline and southern hospitality. So awesome to find both of those, along with the queso in Kensington 🙂
