A message from Katrina announcing ANATOMOTO a new show of artwork

June 3rd, 2011 I will be unveiling my new work inspired by primarily my motivation for sticking to anatomical figures (anatomy+motivation= anatomoto), specifically Geisha’s. During 2005 I took a trip to Japan, I fell in love with the culture, the food, the mix of ultra futuristic contemporary and simple tradition that exist with the culture.

During my B.F.A. at the University of Calgary, my initial concentration of courses during my first two years was drawing, and specifically anatomical drawing. Going back to my honed fundamentals, like charcoal, graphite and chalk with this series feels very organic and natural to me. My love of color comes through in this work with the use of oil and chalk pastels, but for the most part I am trying to stay relatively monochromatic and have painted all the foregrounds in these pieces to look somewhat sepia toned. Even though these mixed media pieces are drawing based, I still seem to view everything in my mind as a photograph, and the only way I can decipher whether a piece is finished, is to photograph it in order to see that it is highly contrasty and vibrant enough not to be washed out by flashes.
